On 11 October 2023, the Council for the Built Environment (CBE) in collaboration with South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession (SACQSP) joins the global community in commemorating the International Day of the Girl Child. In commemoration of this important day, (SACQSP) hosted a “Take a Girl Child to Work” program from 2 to 5 October 2023.

The “Take a Girl Child to Work” program aims to address the gender disparity by introducing female learners to the exciting world of quantity surveying.

Through this program, female learners from selected secondary schools in Midrand, including Allanridge High, Maphutha Secondary, Eqinisweni Secondary, and Phomolong Secondary, were given the opportunity to shadow registered quantity surveying professionals to gain first-hand exposure to the profession. The learners also participated in site visits and attended workshops aimed at providing them with further information and guidance.

As part of this joint initiative, the SACQSP and CBE are actively working towards the transformation of the Quantity Surveying profession.

“We view this initiative as a strategic long-term investment aimed at introducing young girls to the field of quantity surveying from an early age. We firmly believe that by nurturing talent at the grassroots level, we are sowing the seeds for future success and growth. This is also a means of fostering and promoting the profession itself. We consider this as a form of community outreach and a way to give back to society said Ms Onwaba Tselane, Registrar of SACQSP”

“The CBE and SACQSP firmly believe in the transformative power of diversity and inclusion in our industry and our country, by providing young girls with exposure to the quantity surveying profession, we hope to inspire them to pursue STEM subjects and consider BE careers as a preferred choice said Dr Msizi Myeza, CEO of the CBE’’.

The success of the program is credited to the support of the QS firms as well as the Professional/Candidate Quantity Surveyors that willingly participated in the initiative.
